Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder can be a challenge to manage, but Fresh Start Behavioral Health can help! Individuals with bipolar disorder undergo rapid mood swings, ranging from intense highs (mania) to severe lows (depression). Symptoms vary depending on the type of episode. Bipolar episodes can encompass both manic and depressive symptoms. A diagnosis of bipolar disorder necessitates the individual to have encountered at least one episode of mania or hypomania. While specific events like childbirth can trigger manic episodes, many individuals experience these shifts without a clear cause.

Manic or hypomanic symptoms include:

  1. Reduced need for sleep
  2. Heightened talkativeness
  3. Inflated self-esteem or grandiosity
  4. Racing thoughts
  5. Easy distractibility
  6. Increased restlessness
  7. Participation in risky behaviors

Depressive episode symptoms include:

  1. Persistent depressed mood throughout most of the day
  2. Loss of interest in most or all activities
  3. Significant weight loss or change in appetite
  4. Fatigue and loss of energy

Bipolar disorder may also lead to psychosis, a break from reality with hallucinations or delusions.

Bipolar disorder treatment involves medication (mood stabilizers, antidepressants, or anti-psychotics) and psychotherapy. It may take time to find the right medication combination. Our Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) addresses distorted thinking, and our group/family therapies are effective. Visit our offices in Dayton, West Carrolton, or Cincinnati, Ohio to learn more.
