Dr. J. Gibson Pennington is a board-certified psychiatrist with extensive experience in behavioral health, addiction medicine, and trauma-focused care. He currently serves at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs in Dayton, Ohio, where he provides psychiatric care across inpatient, consult-liaison, emergency, and substance use treatment settings.
Dr. Pennington is experienced in medication-assisted treatment (MAT) for opioid and alcohol use disorders and serves as a supervisor for psychiatric physician assistants. He is trained in EMDR, Cognitive Processing Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, psychodynamic psychotherapy, and motivational interviewing.
A former Major in the United States Air Force, Dr. Pennington completed both reserve and active-duty service, including outpatient psychiatry and forensic evaluations for military personnel. He graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of South Alabama College of Medicine and completed his psychiatry residency through the Wright State University/Wright-Patterson Air Force program.
Dr. Pennington has contributed to psychiatric research and publications focusing on PTSD, parasomnias, and addiction treatment and remains actively involved in clinical research involving novel treatments for opioid use disorder.
